How to Install a New Sink Faucet: Step-by-Step Guide

Installing a new sink faucet can be a straightforward task if you follow these steps. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you through the process:

Gather Your Tools and Materials

Tools: Adjustable wrench, basin wrench, plumber’s tape, screwdriver, bucket, and cleaning cloth.
Materials: New faucet, supply lines (if not included with the faucet), and possibly silicone sealant.

Turn Off the Water Supply

Locate the shut-off valves under the sink and turn them clockwise to shut off the water supply. If there are no shut-off valves, turn off the main water supply.
Open the faucet to relieve any remaining water pressure and let any excess water drain out.

Disconnect the Water Supply Lines

Place a bucket under the sink to catch any water that may spill.
Use an adjustable wrench to loosen and disconnect the water supply lines from the existing faucet.

Remove the Old Faucet

Use a basin wrench to loosen and remove the nuts securing the old faucet to the sink.
Carefully lift the old faucet out of the sink and clean the area around the faucet holes.

Prepare the New Faucet

If required, attach the new supply lines to the faucet. Apply plumber’s tape to the threads to ensure a tight seal.

Install the New Faucet

Connect the Water Supply Lines

Attach the water supply lines to the shut-off valves and the faucet shanks. Use an adjustable wrench to tighten the connections securely, but avoid over-tightening which can damage the fittings.
Ensure that hot and cold lines are connected to the correct inlets.

Test the Faucet

Turn the water supply back on by turning the shut-off valves counterclockwise.
Gradually open the faucet to let the water run and check for any leaks. Inspect all connections under the sink to ensure there are no leaks.

Seal Around the Faucet (if needed)

If the manufacturer recommends it, apply a bead of silicone sealant around the base of the faucet where it meets the sink.
Smooth the sealant with a finger or a tool to ensure a clean finish.

Clean Up

Wipe down the sink area to remove any debris or excess sealant.
Dispose of any old components and materials properly.
